Successful symposium on bioassays

Bioassays as methods for assessing water and sediment quality are gaining widespread acceptance. Last week, more than 90 experts from agencies, companies and reserach accepted the Ecotox Centre’s invitation to a two-day symposium on this topic. The speakers presented experiences from Switzerland, Germany and France with the application of bioassays to assess (waste) water, sediments and dredged material. In addition, they showed new approaches for the evaluation, ranging from molecular methods to in situ bioassays and bioindicators. Bioassays allow the overall assessment of the harmful effects of chemical mixtures and thus are an important step on the way to a realistic judgement of environmental risks.
