Background to the debate on the feedback loop for pesticides - new info sheet
A FAQ sheet from the Ecotox Centre provides information on the scientific and regulatory background to the debate on changing the criteria for the feedback loop between water monitoring and the authorisation of plant protection products and biocides.
The setting of specific limit values for individual plant protection products in the Water Protection Ordinance repeatedly raises questions and discussions, particularly in connection with the feedback mechanism between water monitoring and the authorisation of plant protection products and biocides, which has been introduced in 2023. This mechanism stems from Parliamentary Initiative 19.475 ‘Reducing the risk of pesticide use’ and aims to reduce the risks of pesticides in water to a safe level. Priority is given to improving application practices. If this is not sufficiently effective, a ban on individual active substances may also be considered.
A current motion in the National Council is now calling for a change to the criteria for this feedback mechanism. The background to this is the concern that active substances for which agriculture currently has no alternative, such as the insecticide deltamethrin, could also be affected. The National Council approved the motion on 6 May 2025. The Council of States has yet to deliberate on the matter.
