Chironomids measure suspended matter quality

In 2019, the interdisciplinary experimental platform LéXPLORE was installed on Lake Geneva. The Ecotox Centre is currently using the platform to collect suspended matter over several months. After the sampling the effect of the suspended matter quality on chironomid larvae in the different seasons we be investigated. First, the contamination of the suspended matter with metals and organic pollutants will be determined. Then the bioaccumulation of the substances in the larvae will be measured and the expression level of biomarker genes will be observed. Thereby, a system will be developed to assess environmental quality in the field with the help of biomarkers in chironomids.
