Bioassays for the assessment of water quality

The assessment of the water quality with bioassays is particularly useful if biologically active substances and substance mixtures are present that cannot be easily measured with chemical analysis. Within the Modular Stepwise Procedure (MSK) a concept has been developed for the overall assessment of rivers that are contaminated with waste water using ecotoxicological bioassays. The concept represents a first step towards an integrative assessment of water quality.
