Pesticides in the Environment
Pesticides are biologically active substances designed to control unwanted organisms. As plant protection products, they are used in agriculture and horticulture to protect (crop) plants against insects (insecticides), weeds (herbicides) or fungi (fungicides). In other applications, such as in the home, commerce and industry, they are referred to as biocides. Examples include disinfectants, preservatives, wood preservatives, rodenticides and insect sprays. Many of these active substances eventually end up in the environment, where they can harm other organisms or pose a risk to drinking water resources. We measure pesticides in the environment, develop methods for their detection, assess their risks and determine ecotoxicologically safe limit values.

Mixture toxicity assessment of pesticides in soils: new publication
Our new review article synthesises the scientific evidence for mixture toxicity in soils and identifies major data gaps and conceptual shortcomings in the current risk assessment practice in soil. It proposes an approach for the risk assessment of mixtures in soil that considers each individual trophic level separately.

Monitoring concept for plant protection products in Swiss soils
The Ecotox Centre is working with the National Soil Monitoring Programme (NABO) / Agroscope and EnviBioSoil on a concept for monitoring pesticide residues in Swiss agricultural soils. The project is part of the federal government's action plan for risk reduction and sustainable use of pesticides. Project manager and soil ecotoxicologist Mathieu Renaud reports on the progress made so far.

Revision of the Plant Protection Products Ordinance: Ecotox Centre says yes, but
The Ecotox Centre and Eawag welcome a total revision of the Plant Protection Products Ordinance (PPPO). However, the two institutes are calling for improvements on important points, such as the adoption of EU authorisations or the precautionary principle. The ordinance must ensure that other regulations such as the Water Protection or the Environmental Protection Act are not undermined.

Ecotox Centre study leads to postulate in Zurich Cantonal Council
A recent study by the Ecotox Centre has shown that nature reserves are also contaminated with pesticides. A postulate based on this study has now been submitted to the Zurich Cantonal Council.

Biotopes of national importance are also contaminated with plant protection products
The investigation of nine amphibian spawning grounds and three fens has shown that these biotopes of national importance are contaminated with numerous plant protection products. Insecticides from the pyrethroid group in particular exceeded the legal limits and chronic quality criteria, in some cases many fold.
