Roads as a source of pollution
Roads play a vital role in our mobility and are an integral part of everyday life. Yet at the same time, they are a source of chemical contamination in surface waters and soil. Whilst traditional pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals from asphalt and petrol were initially a cause for concern, tire wear later became an additional factor. The latter represents a major source of microplastics entering the environment, but also contains numerous chemicals. Several current projects at the Ecotox Centre demonstrate just how diverse the impacts of road traffic are – and how important it is to investigate them in a comprehensive manner.

Roads as a source of pollution: new challenges
When it comes to the release of hazardous substances from roads into the environment, the focus is increasingly shifting from traditional pollutants and particles to novel, and in some cases unknown, substances. The Ecotox Centre is investigating the ecotoxicological effects of road runoff and tire wear and is attempting to identify the most critical substances.

Earthworms avoid tire abrasion
Tire abrasion gets from the road into the adjacent soil and can affect the soil organisms living there. A new study shows that earthworms avoid soil that is heavily contaminated with tire particles. However, the particles had no negative effects on the survival and reproduction of the animals.

Toxic effects of tire abrasion
Tire particles contain substances that have potentially estrogenic, genotoxic and bacteriotoxic effects and can be released into the environment. Using an innovative method, the researchers were able to show which substances contribute to these effects.

Tire wear particles - toxic for fish?
Experiments with gill cells and intestinal cells of rainbow trout show that the concentrations of tire wear particles found in the environment are not acutely toxic to fish. However, the chronic toxicity should be further investigated, as should the mechanism of action of the toxic oxidation product 6PPD-quinone.

Tire wear as a source of pollutants
Although large quantities of tire wear are released into the environment, we still know little about the toxicity of those small particles. The particles contain not only rubber, but also numerous metals and organic substances. Researchers from the Ecotox Centre, EPFL and Eawag are currently investigating whether these substances are bioavailable and what toxic effects they may have.
