European EQS experts meet at the Ecotox Centre
On 29 and 30 October 2026, the Ecotox Centre hosted quality criteria experts from numerous European countries for a multilateral meeting, with several countries also joining online. The aim of these irregular meetings is to discuss current issues relating to the determination of Environmental Quality Standards (EQS). Here, EU member states and associated countries exchange their experiences in deriving quality criteria for specific environmental contaminants. This time, the focus was on metals.
The Ecotox Centre has been deriving and proposing environmental quality criteria for Switzerland since 2010. These values depict critical concentrations for contaminants above which harmful effects on organisms cannot be excluded, and they are determined by a defined process on the basis of ecotoxicologcal data. Several of these values have already been integrated into the Swiss Water Protection
