Mixture toxicity assessment of pesticides in soils: new publication

Even though pesticide residues in European soils are normally found as mixtures of several compounds, current environmental risk assessments in soil still evaluate each pesticide in isolation, thereby overlooking potential mixture effects on soil organisms and soil ecosystem functions.

Our new review synthesises the scientific evidence for mixture toxicity in soils and identifies major data gaps and conceptual shortcomings in the current scientific and regulatory environmental risk assessment practice in soil. On this basis, we suggest a trophic-level-specific approach to mixture risk assessment to assess mixture risks in soils. These insights aim to inform and support international developments such as the new EU Soil Monitoring Law as well as experimental soil studies.
