Pesticides in Swiss surface waters surpass environmental quality criteria

A new screening survey has found more than 100 different pesticides in watercourses of the Swiss Mittelland. In each area, an average of 7-8 substances exceeded their respective effect-based quality criteria - a clear signal that the consideration of single substances is insufficient for the ecotoxicological assessment of water quality. With respect to their land use, the selected sites are representative for medium to highly polluted medium-sized rivers in the Swiss Mittelland. Therefore, other watercourses must be expected to be polluted to a similar degree.
