Info sheet on sunscreens in surface waters

Sunscreens protect us against skin cancer, but they also end up in surface waters when we go swimming. And the UV filters they contain can have harmful effects on organisms in the ecosystem. A new Ecotox Centre info sheet provides information about the various UV filters and their effects on surface waters and also gives recommendations for more eco-friendly sun protection.

The Ecotox Centre has already investigated the behaviour of UV filters in a bathing lake in a pilot project and is currently planning further studies to gain a broader insight into the fate of UV filters in Swiss bathing waters.
